12Aug2007. The Water Fountain (Jet D'Eau) of Lake Geneva has become the symbol of Geneva. At origin, it had an completely utilitarian function: a valve to regulate the water pressure in the Geneva water distribution system. When the water pressure was too high, in order to prevent the pipes from bursting, a safety valve released the excess pressure into a water jet.
bullet. In 1891, the Geneva water jet was moved to its present location and became a tourist attraction. But the water spewed only when the pressure in the city water system was dangerously high. In 1947 "esthetics" took over, and a pump was installed, to shoot the water "on schedule".
bullet. Today, the fountain shoots 132 gallons (500 liters) per second (!!!) at 124 miles per hour (200 km per hour), to a height of 460 feet (140 meters).
